Understanding Video Quality

Quality Settings in Jellyfin

SeaFin displays quality options as bitrates in Mbps (megabits per second), not resolution names:

  • Higher Mbps = Better quality, requires faster internet
  • Lower Mbps = Lower quality, works on slower connections
  • Auto - Automatically adjusts based on your connection
  • Original - Highest available quality (no transcoding)

Available Quality Options

Auto
Recommended
Automatically adjusts based on your connection speed and device capabilities.
Original
Highest Quality
Full quality, no compression - uses maximum available bitrate (up to 200 Mbps).
High Bitrates
15-50 Mbps
Premium quality for fast connections - excellent for 4K content and large screens.
Standard Options
1-15 Mbps
Good quality HD streaming - suitable for most viewing situations.
Low Bandwidth
720 Kbps - 2 Mbps
Basic quality for slow connections - ensures smooth playback on limited bandwidth.

Recommendation: Start with Auto and let the system choose. If you experience lag, manually lower the setting incrementally.

Network Requirements

SeaFin Recommendation: 50+ Mbps internet connection for optimal experience

  • Why 50+ Mbps: Handles high-quality streams with headroom for other devices
  • Multiple devices: Allows family members to use internet simultaneously
  • Quality headroom: Prevents buffering during peak usage times
  • Future-proofing: Supports 4K content and high bitrate streams
Speed Test: Use speedtest.net to check your internet speed. If you have less than 50 Mbps, you can still use SeaFin but may need to use lower quality settings.

  4. Close other internet-using apps
  5. Use wired connection instead of WiFi if possible

For Fast Internet (25+ Mbps)

  1. Start with Auto - system will optimize
  2. Try Original if you want maximum quality
  3. Use wired connection for most stable experience
  4. Lower incrementally if any buffering occurs

For Variable Internet

  1. Keep auto-adjust enabled
  2. Set maximum quality to your connection's peak capability
  3. Lower quality during peak usage hours
  4. Monitor for buffering and adjust as needed

Device-Specific Optimization
